MSC CRUISES CAPTAINS

MSC’s Captains have extensive experience and have earned all of the official international marine certifications as well as undergoing rigorous updating licensing courses and training organized by the Coast Guard or recognized Marine academies. Programmes include courses such as navigation, engineering, meteorology, radar, deck safety, among others .

Captain Giuliano Bossi

Captain Bossi has a huge experience of commanding cruise ships. He was Captain of Costa Crociere ships for 25 years, from 1981 to 2006. In 2007 he joined MSC Cruises and in 2008 he was named Captain of MSC Fantasia during the christening in Naples. Today he is on his 9th season with MSC Cruises. Captain Bossi has commanded all MSC Cruise classes.

He has been an MSC Cruises’ Captain for a total of 61 months.

Captain Giuseppe Galano

Captain Galano started his career with MSC Cargo in 1981 when he embarked on board MSC Juba  as a young boy . In 1990 he embarked for the first time on a passenger ship as 2nd Officer. Thanks to his skills, in 1996, when he was only 30 years old, he was given his first command of a cargo ship. He held this rank for ten embarks before moving to his first command of a passenger ship in 2005. He is today at his 14th embark on board MSC Cruises ships. Captain Galano has commanded vessels belonging to the Lirica and Musica classes.

He has been MSC Cargo Captain for a total of 86 months.
He has been MSC Cruises Captain for a total of 88 months

Captain Raffaele Iaccarino

Captain Iaccarino started his career with MSC Cargo in 1996 as a deck officer. In 1998 he moved to the group's passenger vessels, where he was promoted to the position of staff captain in 2006. 

He was an MSC Cruises' Staff Captain for 78 months.
He was promoted to the role of captain in August 2012.

Captain Corrado Iaconis

Captain Iaconis started his career with MSC in 1992 with the rank of second officer of passenger ships and in 2004 he was promoted to Staff Captain, a rank that he held until 2009. He was then promoted to Captain of MSC Cargo vessels and after two seasons he was given the command of his first passenger ship, MSC Sinfonia, in 2009. Today he is on his 4th season as Captain of MSC cruise ships. Captain Iaconis has commanded Lirica and Musica class ships.

He was an MSC Cruises’ Staff Captain for 50 months.
He was an MSC Cargo Captain for 34 months
He has been an MSC Cruises’ Captain for a total of 32 months

Captain Michele Longobardi

Captain Longobardi started his career as officer on watch on passenger Costa ships where he worked his way up to 2nd officer. He sailed for many seasons on Italmare  ships, where he was given the rank of Captain and crew manager , in 1998 he was In Electra ( off shore) as Master with azipod system propulsor he held for many years. In 2008 he joined MSC Cruises with the rank of staff captain and in 2009 he was given the command of MSC Melody. Today he is on his 5th embark with MSC Cruises. Captain Longobardi has commanded ships belonging to the Lirica class and MSC Melody.

He was an MSC Cruises Staff Captain for 36 months.
He has been MSC Cruises Captain for a total of 36 months

Captain Mattia Manzi

Captain Manzi started his career with MSC Cargo in 1972 and in the 1975 he was promoted to the rank of first officer until 1985. The following year, Captain Manzi decided to change to passenger liners and moved to Carnival Cruise Lines where , following the required career steps, he became Captain and commanded passenger vessels from 1999 to 2003. In 2004 Captain Manzi returned to MSC where he took command of MSC Sinfonia. Captain Manzi is in his 14th season of commands on MSC passenger vessels, of which three have been on the largest class, Fantasia. Captain Manzi has commanded all classes of the MSC Cruises' fleet.

He has been MSC Cruises Captain for a total of 79 months

Captain Giuseppe Maresca

Captain Giuseppe Maresca started his career with MSC Cargo in 1989 as deck cadet on MSC Ilaria. He demonstrated extraordinary skills and was given first command of a cargo vessel when he was only 34. He held this rank for eight seasons before moving on to first command of a passenger ship in 2007 - MSC Lirica. Today, he is on his 11th embark on board MSC cruise ships.
Captain Maresca has commanded ships belonging to the Lirica class and Musica class.

He was an MSC Cargo Captain for a total of 86 months.
He has been MSC Cruises’ Captain for a total of 60 months

Captain Marco Massa

Captain Marco Massa started his career on June 1995 on Old fashion Ship MSC Symphony as Junior Cadet Officer, during next years he was sailing on MSC Rhapsody and MSC Melody, as Navigator Officer, on cruise all around Mediterranean, Caribbean, South Africa and South America coasts.
On 2003 he embarked on New MSC Cruise Ship, in construction in the Saint Nazaire Yard, the MSC Lirica as Environmental Officer and subsequently on MSC Opera year after. He was employed as Safety Officer on MSC Opera and MSC Sinfonia and in charge of new constructions and Start-up of MSC Orchestra, MSC Poesia, MSC Fantasia, MSC Splendida and MSC Magnifica.

He was employed as Staff Captain from 2006 to 2012, and on July 2012 he was promoted Captain on MSC Musica.

Captain Ciro Pinto

Captain Ciro Pinto started his career with MSC Cargo in 1993 with the rank of first officer. In 1994, after two embarks, he was promoted to Captain of MSC Cargo ships where he remained for 13 seasons. In 2007 he was given the command of his first passenger vessel, MSC Melody. He is now on his 6th embark on board passenger ships. Captain Pinto has commanded Melody and Lirica class ships and was the Captain of Melody when the ship was attacked by pirates in 2009, where his skill and decision making helped ensure the safety of all guests and crew.


He was an MSC Cargo Captain for 140 months.
He has been an MSC Cruises’ Captain for a total of 67 months

Captain Raffaele Pontecorvo

Captain Pontecorvo started his career with MSC Cargo in 1982 when he embarked on board MSC Corinna as deck cadet. In 1990 he embarked for the first time on a passenger ship as 2nd Officer and from 1995 to 2000 he held the rank of Staff Captain. In 2000 he was promoted to Captain of MSC Monterey and after MSC Cargo ships, where he remained until 2004 after a total of 6 embarks. In 2004 he choose to permanently command passenger ships and in 2010 he was given the command of MSC Splendida. Captain Pontecorvo is in his 12th season of commands on MSC passengers vessels and has commanded all classes of the MSC Cruises' fleet.

He has been MSC Cargo Captain for a total of 41 months.
He has been MSC Cruises Staff Captain for 52 months.
He has been MSC Cruises Captain for a total of 78 months

Captain Ferdinando Ponti

Captain Ponti started his career with MSC Cargo in 1982 with the rank of first officer. He was given his first command of MSC Cargo vessels four years later in 1986, and went on to command these vessels for 21 seasons. Due to his extensive experience, especially on larger and new generation vessels, in 2005 MSC offered him his first command of a passenger vessel. Captain Ponti is in his 12th season of commands on MSC passenger vessels, of which three have been the largest class, Fantasia. Captain Ponti has commanded all classes of the MSC Cruises' fleet.

He has been MSC Cargo Captain for a total of 163 months
He has been MSC Cruises Captain for a total of 52 months

Captain Raffaele Ponti

The younger brother of MSC Captain Raffaele Ponti started his career with MSC Cargo in 1979 with the rank of third officer. In 1990 he was given his first command of a cargo ship on MSC Barbara. In 2006, after 23 seasons, MSC Cruises offered him his first command of a cruise ship, on MSC Lirica. Captain Ponti  has commanded Lirica class ships and the MSC Melody.

He was an MSC Cargo Captain for a total of 129 months
He has been an MSC Cruises’ Captain for a total of 66 months

Captain Giacomo Romano

Captain Romano started his career with MSC in 1994 with the rank of second officer, after serving on board Renaissance Cruises' fleet. In 2001 he became Staff Captain on board Monterey, and in 2005 he was promoted to Captain. Today he is on his 14th season with MSC. Captain Romano has commanded ships belonging to the Lirica and Musica classes and the Melody.

He was an MSC Cruises' Staff Captain on MSC ships for 52 months

Captain Paolo Russo

Captain Paolo Russo started his career in MSC in 1998 with the rank of first officer on MSC Cargo ships (before 1998 he was master of cargo ship). In 2001 he was given his first command of a cargo ship and in 2002 he embarked on MSC Melody as Staff Captain, a role he held until 2008 when, due to his extensive experience in podded propulsion systems, he was promoted to Captain of MSC Lirica. Today he is on his 9th season on MSC cruise ships. Captain Paolo Russo has commanded Lirica class ships and Melody.

He was an MSC Cargo Captain for 33 months
He was a Staff Captain on board MSC cruise ships for 83 months
He has been an MSC Cruises’ Captain for a total of 46 months

Captain Raffaele Russo

Captain Raffaele Russo started his career in 1982 as first officer and in 1988 he was given his first command of an MSC Cargo vessel, going on to command these vessels for 23 seasons. In 2006 MSC offered him his first command of a cruise ship, the Monterey. Today he is on his 9th season with MSC Cruises. Captain Raffaele Russo has commanded Musica and Lirica class ships as well as the Melody.

Captain Pierpaolo Scala

An 18-year veteran officer with Carnival Cruise Lines, Captain Scala, like many great mariners, hails from Sicily. Prior to joining Carnival, he piloted massive oil tankers around the globe for Chevron. In 2011, after 2 months of familiarization trainings on MSC Cruises ships he took the command of MSC Opera. He has a huge experience in podded propulsion systems.

Captain Pietro Scarpato

Captain Scarpato started his career with MSC Cargo in 1994 as a 3° officer. In 1999 he moved to the group’s passenger vessels, where he was promoted to the position of staff captain in 2006.

He was an MSC Cruises' Staff Captain for 78 months.
He was promoted to the role of captain in July 2012.

Captain Antonio Siviero

Captain Siviero started his career with MSC Cargo in 1978 with the rank of first officer. He was given his first command of a cargo vessel in 1989 and went on to command these vessels for 22 embarks. In 2003 MSC Cruises offered him his first command of a passenger ship, the Monterey. Captain Siviero is now in his 15th season of commands on board MSC cruise ships. Captain Siviero belongs to a sailors’ family, and all of his brothers are Captains too. Captain Siviero has commanded Lirica class ships and the MSC Melody.

He was an MSC Cargo Captain for a total of 100 months

Captain Mario Stiffa

Captain Stiffa started his career as second  officer on board Costa  ships. From 1979 to 1988 he worked with MSC Cargo as ship superintendent. In 1989 he joined Ecolmare  as Captain and supervisor. In 2000 he joined MSC Cargo with the rank of Captain and held this rank for eight seasons before moving to his first command of a passenger ship, MSC Lirica, in 2004. He is today on his 15th embark on board passenger ships. Captain Stiffa has commanded all classes of the MSC Cruises’ fleet.

Captain Francesco Saverio Veniero

Captain Veniero started his career with MSC in 1993 and was promoted to Second Officer in 1999. After serving with other cruise companies he re-joined MSC Cruises as Staff Captain in 2005. He held this rank for six seasons until he was promoted to Captain in 2009. Today he is on his 6th season on an MSC ship. Captain Veniero has commanded Lirica and Musica class ships.

He was an MSC Cruises Staff Captain for 60 months
