Naples

The striking Angevin keep, symbol of the city

Naples is a large, sprawling Mediterranean port, with a centre that has many different focuses just waiting to be discovered on an MSC Mediterranean cruise excursion.

No trip to Naples is complete without visiting the area between Piazza Garibaldi and Via Toledo, roughly corresponding to the old Roman Neapolis (much of which is still unexcavated like in many other Italian cities).

The old part of Naples – the centro storico – is formed by the main streets of Via dei Tribunali and Via San Biagio dei Librai (the latter also known as “Spaccanapoli” as it literally splits Naples in two), which still follow the path of the ancient Roman roads. This is much the liveliest and most teeming part of Naples, an open-air kasbah of hawking, yelling humanity that makes up in energy what it lacks in grace. But it’s the city’s most intriguing quarter, and a must-see on any cruise to Naples. The Duomo is a Gothic building from the early thirteenth century (though with a late nineteenth-century neo-Gothic facade) dedicated to the patron saint of the city, San Gennaro

MSC Mediterranean cruises also offer excursions to Pompeii. One of Campania’s most important Roman commercial centres – a moneyed resort for wealthy patricians and a trading town that exported wine and fish – the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 in effect froze the town’s way of life as it stood at the time.

Trips can also be taken to the island of Capri, place of legend, home to the mythical Sirens and a much-eulogized playground of the super-rich in the years since – though now it has settled down to a lucrative existence as a target for day-trippers from the mainland.

Definitely worth a visit, but these days the origins of much of the purple prose may be hard to find.

  • EXCURSION TO VESUVIUS

    ACTIVE & ADVENTURE

    NAP04

The beautiful Bay of Naples in the south of Italy is dominated by the town’s most iconic landmark: Mount Vesuvius, whose main cone currently reaches nearly 1,300 metres. While the slopes are marked by lava flows, a testament to earlier eruptions, they also feature heavy vegetation with vineyards in the foothills as well as scrubland and forestation higher up. Mount Vesuvius’ best-known eruption occurred in A.D. 79 and resulted in the destruction of two cities: Pompeii and Herculaneum, which were only rediscovered in the 18th century. An enjoyable guided walking tour will take you to the crater, from which point you can see a bed of lava and look out over the beautiful Gulf of Naples. Your return journey to the ship will give you more opportunity to admire the landscape’s lovely vistas. Please note: we suggest wearing comfortable walking shoes for the 30-minute climb up to the crater. In case of bad weather, the tour programme will take guests on a panoramic tour of Naples

      • SORRENTO & POMPEI

        CITY TOUR

        NAP08

Your tour begins with a 1-hour coach drive through pretty coastal villages to Sorrento for an enjoyable walking tour. Starting at the Piazza Tasso, you will then continue through Sorrento’s narrow old streets to reach the 15th-century “Sedil Dominova” loggia as well as pass by the Cathedral and the famous San Francesco's Church for external viewings. You will then continue by coach to Pompeii for a visit to the famous archaeological site. Pompeii was completely buried by lava, rubble and ash during the catastrophic eruption of Vesuvius in A.D. 79. It then lay hidden and perfectly preserved under tonnes of volcanic ash for almost 1,700 years before being accidentally rediscovered in the mid-18th century and then subsequently being excavated. The many artefacts that were found, especially items of daily life such as bread and honey, will give you a glimpse of the lives these ancient Romans lived. A fascinating guided walking tour will provide insight into the history of this amazing and very large archaeological site. A stop will also be made at a local coral factory on your return journey to the ship. Please note: this excursion includes long walking on uneven ground; there are big slabs of stone in the streets of Pompeii so this tour is not suitable for guests with walking difficulties or using a wheelchair.

              NAP16

Get set to discover two of Naples’ best-kept secrets on this guided half-day excursion, which starts with a drive from the pier to Naples’ historical quarter. Continuing on foot from Piazza del Gesù Nuovo to Piazza San Domenico, you will pass residences built by key members of Naples’ society. Then it is onwards down Spaccanapoli, the main thoroughfare of old Naples, and San Gregorio Armeno, a.k.a. the “Street of the Nativity Scenes” for the many shops selling nativity figurines. Next up is your look at “Naples Underground”, an experience that will see you take a candlelit walk through a subterranean labyrinth of partly manmade tunnels and caverns. Charting 2,400 years of history and part of a natural geothermal zone beneath the city, the place heavily features a yellowish igneous rock known as tuff, which is common in the Naples’ region. The rock will also play a critical part in your pizza-making class. Restored to full use in the 17th-century, but actually thought to have been used by Emperor Nero during Roman times, the ancient oven at the Roman theatre is made of tuff stone, giving it both excellent dough-proving and -baking properties. Look forward to tasting the mouth-watering treat straight from the oven. In addition, since you will have made it yourself, you will even get to return to the ship with a set of freshly baked bragging rights. Please note: during the visit to “Napoli sotterranea” guests shall walk in line along sometimes very narrow paths; lightning is only by candles. This tour is not suitable for guests with mobility problems, who are claustrophobic or use a wheelchair.

A cruise to Italy is an emotional roller coaster. Rome is a tremendous city quite unlike any other, and in terms of historical sights outstrips everywhere else in the country by some way.

Liguria, the small coastal province along the north-west coast, has long been known as the “Italian Riviera” and is accordingly crowded with sun-seekers for much of the summer.
In Veneto the main focus of interest is, of course, Venice: a unique city, and every bit as beautiful as its reputation would suggest. Tuscany in central Italy represents perhaps the most commonly perceived image of the country, with its classic rolling countryside and the art-packed towns of Florence and Pisa.

The south proper begins with the region of Campania. Its capital, Naples, is a unique, unforgettable city, the spiritual heart of the Italian south. Puglia, the “heel” of Italy, has underrated pleasures, too, notably the landscape of its Gargano peninsula and the souk-like qualities of its capital, Bari.

As for Sicily, the island is really a place apart, with a wide mixture of attractions ranging from some of the finest preserved Hellenistic treasures in Europe, to a couple of Italy’s most appealing Mediterranean beach resorts in Taormina and Cefalù, not to mention some gorgeous upland scenery.
