WORLD OCEANS DAY: HONOURING THE SEAS THAT SUSTAIN US

June 2025

At MSC Cruises, the sea is not just a destination; it’s our home. It connects continents, supports life, and inspires us every day. But today, our ocean is under increasing pressure from overfishing, climate change, and the degradation of vital marine ecosystems.

That’s why we’re so proud of our MSC Foundation and its programmes that aim to protect and restore the health of the oceans we all depend on.

To mark World Oceans Day, we’re shining a light on some of the MSC Foundation’s inspiring efforts — powered by science, partnerships, and our ongoing commitment to care for the planet.

Restoring Coral Reefs in the Bahamas

At our private island in the Bahamas, Ocean Cay, we are giving nature a second chance, transforming this former industrial site through our work. For this reason, it has been designated a “Hope Spot” by Mission Blue, the non-profit organization founded by renowned oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle. The Super Coral Reefs Programme is cultivating heat-resilient coral species to rebuild damaged reefs. To support this initiative, a new Marine Conservation Center dedicated to coral science, restoration, and public awareness was opened last April 2025 for cruise guests at Ocean Cay.

Bringing Coastal Ecosystems Back to Life

In Formentera, Spain, the Foundation is working closely with Mission Blue and Vellmari to replant seagrass meadows to provide vital underwater habitats that capture carbon, improve water quality, and support marine life. Across the world we are helping nature thrive where it once struggled.

Global Coral Science with Impact

Together with the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature), the MSC Foundation is supporting a landmark global assessment of coral species, equipping conservationists and policymakers with the data they need to protect fragile reef ecosystems.

Educating Future Ocean Stewards

Through partnerships with organisations like Marevivo, the MSC Foundation supports ocean education programmes to promote environmental awareness and marine conservation in schools across the Mediterranean, encouraging young people to protect the sea from an early age.
